Jeff Austin and Kevin Shaw Win it All in the Texas Redfish Series

Blue Wave would like to congratulate Jeff Austin and Kevin Shaw on their outstanding 2007 season! They swept the Texas Redfish Championship and also landed the 2007 Team of the Year! We are very excited to have you on our team! Keep reading for Jeff’s first hand account of the entire tournament!

It was the morning of the Texas Redfish Championship’s first day. Kevin and I were boat 25 in the line up of 86 total boats. Our current standing was 2nd place for team of the year, but we were shooting for first. Last year we finished second and were left unsatisfied. We were hoping this would be our year.

Our number got called so off we went in our 2200 Pure Bay to our honey hole. We got to our first spot and grabbed the rods. We put some Lunker sauce (shrimp) on our D.O.A. C.A.L. series silver mullet lures and began the fishing day. We proceeded to catch numerous 24”-26” chunky redfish and then I felt the hit. As I set the hook the drag started smoking. Kevin with excitement in his voice said, “I think it might be the one we were looking for.” Sure enough it was a 27.5” pig redfish and weighed almost 9lbs. Within the next few casts Kevin locked on to another 27” plus pig red. We got both of the heavy redfish in the live-well and were very happy and relaxed. We knew we had at least 16.5 lbs. in the box at the weigh in on the first day. The two reds weighed in at 17.5 lbs. and we were leading the field by 2 lbs., but Sunday was another day of fishing and who knows what it would bring.

Sunday morning came and our number was called, so off we went. Back to our same honey hole we made multiple casts and only got a couple of small reds after three hours of catching croaker and rats. We were about to call it quits and then Kevin whispered, “there they are.” Anchoring up, we sat quietly watching red after red go by. We decided to pull up and start creeping back into the hole to make some casts, but something was different. The reds were not on the bottom like they had been, but on the top of the water column. This meant we could see the fish easily so we proceeded to the top of our removable casting decks made by Texas Tops. We had a bird’s eye view and Kevin went to doing what he does best, short casting D.O.A.’s to reds. So this meant I became the net boy.

We knew we needed 15 lbs. to have the day we needed. One hour after four or five fish we had our 15 plus lbs. As we were going to our Blue Wave sponsored weigh-in, Kevin said “it’s in the bag Jeff, calm down.” I couldn’t calm down until the fat lady sang. About 5p.m. on the second day we were declared the 2007 State Champions and also Team of the Year. This was easily one of the best days for the both of us.
